Case study · Levigato

From a pen sketch to a product sold by a global brand.

Levigato began after a weightlifting injury. During rehabilitation, a physical therapist suggested yoga, and Nick quickly noticed two problems with traditional mats: they could become slippery when sweaty and were difficult to keep clean. While restoring a boat, he recognized that closed-cell marine flooring offered the grip and cleanability he wanted — but the material did not lend itself to rolling.

Instead of forcing the material into the old format, Nick changed the format. He developed a folding architecture, recruited engineers and a manufacturer, adapted CNC milling to create functional fold lines, launched the concept through Kickstarter and ultimately structured a private-label/licensing partnership with lululemon.

Freeway Power

Born while helping his father change a flat tire on the side of a highway. Feeling the force of passing traffic sparked the idea that moving vehicles displace usable energy. The concept explored roadside vertical-turbine modules intended to capture traffic-generated airflow and convert it into electricity.

Square Can / Space-Saver Packaging

A packaging concept built around a simple question: could a beverage container use cooler and refrigerator space more efficiently? The squared footprint was explored as a way to reduce the unused gaps created when cylindrical cans are packed together, while still considering manufacturability and familiar beverage-can functionality.

Measuring Scissors

A utility-scissors concept that integrates laser-etched measurement markings directly into the blade. The goal is to combine cutting and quick measurement in a single tool — a small example of adding useful function without adding another object to the workspace.

Vehicle / Chassis Design

Bling Design can also operate at a much more complex scale. This vehicle program illustrates body and chassis concept development, proportion studies, component packaging and CAD visualization — the same sketch-to-engineering mindset applied to a far more demanding system.

In the field

Built in a fast-moving environment.

Since 1996, Nick has worked in Charleston’s maritime logistics industry, where ships, cranes, cargo, transportation teams and changing conditions must remain coordinated under pressure.

That experience sharpened his ability to process information quickly, manage competing priorities, communicate clearly and make decisive choices.

“My experience on the waterfront has taught me to think quickly, adapt on the fly and maintain clear communication and situational awareness under pressure. Time is money, and every second counts.”

Hands-on execution

Not afraid to get into the work.

Nick’s projects do not stop at the drawing board. Whether coordinating waterfront operations, receiving an imported stone shipment or working through a product problem on site, he is comfortable being present with the team and helping push the job across the finish line. Strategy matters. So does execution.

Recognition and mission

Turning emergency frustration into a better system.

REACT Software grew from Nick’s personal experiences with emergency communication breakdowns and his belief that callers, dispatchers and responders need a faster, clearer way to share critical information.

His high-pressure logistics background and hands-on product-development experience helped shape REACT’s practical, operations-driven approach to public safety.

Ready for Rescue · Rescue Tracer

Assemble the team. Build the prototype. Solve the mission.

When the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate and the U.S. Coast Guard launched the Ready for Rescue Challenge, Nick assembled a multidisciplinary team spanning mechanical engineering, industrial design and chemical engineering to pursue a better way to make a person in the water easier to detect.

The team developed the Rescue Tracer / Rapid Rescue Beacon, a non-pyrotechnic signaling concept that combined multiple visibility and detection methods. The team was declared a winner of the Ready for Rescue Challenge.

Serving the community

Helping turn a civic vision into a public space.

Nick presented Mount Pleasant Town Council with his vision for expanding the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park beneath the Ravenel Bridge.

The proposal advanced through approval and funding and was ultimately built, creating additional public space designed around recreation, community use and access.

The project reflects Nick’s broader approach: recognize an unmet need, build a practical plan, bring the right people together and keep working until the idea becomes real.

The operating method

See it. Shape it. Build it.

Nick’s projects often start as an observation rather than a formal brief. The process is repeatable: understand the real problem, sketch a better approach, validate the details and keep moving until there is something tangible to test.

01ObserveNotice friction, inefficiency or an unmet need.
02ImagineChallenge the default and sketch an alternative.
03EngineerTranslate the idea into geometry, systems and constraints.
04ValidatePrototype, test and refine against real use.
05ExecuteBuild the product, partnership, company or public initiative.

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On!” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

Beyond the work

Charleston, the water and Amiga.

Nick’s life outside work reflects the same curiosity and sense of community that drive his ventures: exploring the Lowcountry, spending time on the water and sharing Charleston with his rescue Great Pyrenees, Amiga. He regularly supports local adoption agencies by donating supplies and helping spread awareness for animals in need of permanent homes.
